About SSHH

store

Sixth Street Haunted House is a new multi-purpose mutant space where you can come and learn, make, buy or share something. We opened on October 31st, 2018. SSHH is run by Bráulio Amado and Nick Schiarizzi.

Weekends, from 2pm to 7pm, the space is a store. Weekdays after 7pm, we host events, classes, talks, art happenings, shows, you get it, etc.

Why?

Because we think New York could be 10000x weirder than it is right now. Come by and learn French with us, or tell us nasty stories in the dark, or bring your art to hang on the wall, or watch weird performances or just complain with us about how everyone in NYC these days is a Lululemon brunch drone from Ohio. No offense.’

This is cute.
Are you rich?

No. Our space costs roughly $2500 a month to run, not including construction investments we’ve made in the space. We believe that being an artist in NYC means you need to starve to death and do a gofundme to pay your medical bills after they bring you back from being dead. If you buy stuff here, or donate $ for an event, or buy a class-pack, you’re helping us to stay alive.

Who is this for?

This isn’t an exclusive art gallery that you aren’t invited to. This is a storefront space that we are still defining, and we want people to be a part of it. We think people want to learn and create past age 30 or 40 or 50 or 60 and this space is here for you to do that and congratulate one another on not having had kids. Or if you do have kids, you can come (just leave them at home). Please.

FAQs:

Why are RSVPs and tickets so limited?
SSHH is housed in a small storefront space. Classes and workshops hold a maximum of 9 people around a desk plus a teacher, while for talks we can fit 12 people seated in chairs, plus a speaker. Some events, like music shows, can fit a maximum of 25 people, standing.

Can I just buy a ticket at the door?
Yes, but there’s no guarantee that we will have tickets available at the door. The safest way to ensure you can join us for whichever event or class you’re eyeing, is to get your ticket online in advance. Even free events require an online RSVP most of the time.

What if there aren’t enough people to fill a class?
We will send out an email a week before the class starts if attendance is too low to keep the class on the schedule. If you don’t hear from us, assume the class is good to go.

Where’s the money going?
We split profits with our speakers, teachers, and artist partners. We use our profits to pay the rent, pay for utilities, and pay for supplies, among other things. We also pay ourselves! We think it’s important to put a value on the work we are doing in running this space. Living in NYC, artists often feel overly apologetic about earning money and charging for their work. We want to reverse this mindset.
